Engine out: strip-down and first inspection

The 2.5-litre straight six comes out and apart — and tells us what fifty years of driving really looks like.

TR6 engine on an engine stand, partly stripped

The heart of this car is its 2.5-litre straight six, so that’s where the project starts. Engine and gearbox came out together from above — slow going, but a load leveller on the crane made all the difference.

With the engine on the stand, the strip-down took a weekend. Every part was bagged, labelled and photographed as it came off, so reassembly won’t depend on anyone’s memory.

The verdict from first inspection: a sound engine that is simply worn out. The bores need a rebore to the next oversize, the crank needs a regrind, and the rest is careful cleaning and new bearings throughout.
